Can anyone recommend a good free WHOIS source for multiple searches?

I need a whois source that will allow data to be scraped using an SEO PHP script without there being a limit on how many free searches can be carried out before the site blocks access, limits what data is scraped or has registration/access requirements that might cause the script to fail completely.

I've had recommended to me this site - http://whoisxmlapi.com/ the API for which allows unlimited searches but it's a paid service so before springing for it I was wondering if anyone knows of another better option?

    Cheers, :)

I think it sounds reasonable that such service should be on subscription (paid) when you do unlimited searches.

I think 123-reg has got a free API. I have a membership site that runs tons of queries on their API without any issues.

I am the author of RoboWhois, a cloud-based web service that provides a RESTful API to access WHOIS records and domain related information.

We support all existing TLDs, as long as they provide a public WHOIS interface. I encourage you to give it a try, let me know if you have any questions.
