Has anyone got any idea what kind of spider this is ... I've never seen one like it in my life. I generally take spiders outside to run free, but this one looked like bad news to me, so he went to spider heaven.
Because we've got some of the most venomous spiders in the world, and if I can't ID a spider, then I'm not taking a chance.
It's definitely not a black widow or a brown recluse. Those are the only two spiders around here that we have to worry about.
Every spider on the planet is venomous. I think you guys mean dangerous to humans. Sure, I understand. If you could describe where you live and where you found it, I could identify it for you. I'm a biologist, you see. Note that answers like "Australia" and "my house" aren't very useful; I need you to be a bit more specific than that. And if you could provide some more pictures, that'd be great. Pictures of its carapace and abdomen would be ideal.
I'm only guessing from a glance, it might be a wolf spider couldn't tell for sure we get them here in Aust. ROOFIS
Sorry, I don't have any more pictures - at least none that show anything other than the pic I posted. It was found in Central Victoria, AU, inside a house, with no web in sight.
I live in Moe, Vic- I've found something that looks like your guest, Spotted Ground Spider (Storena sp) http://www.ozanimals.com/Spider/Spotted-Ground-Spider/Storena/sp.html it's strikingly similar to yours better pic here: http://www.usq.edu.au/spider/find/spiders/images/539D10.jpg ROOFIS
I think we have a winner! That's the closest I've seen to it. I feel kinda bad for killing the little guy now
It's looks like you found it's southern cousin It might be worth telling your local wildlife service as the spiders pictured in the link were photographed in Buderim, Sunshine Coast, Queensland. It looks like a rare tropical species and very rare in Victoria ROOFIS
There you go . . . I'm pretty sure ROOFIS has solved it. It does look like a Spotted Ground Spider (Storena formosa).
Hello Kerosene dont feel bad i think you did the right thing by killing it. This spider may be a venmous spider. Sure looks like one. So dont worry be cool like you always are
You've got a bad link, apparently 'access denied' you can utilize CC (Creative Commons) licensed images as they are open source. ROOFIS
That's strange. How come it works for me? Anyway . . . I'm sure you were correct in your identification.
