I really could do with some help here as this is the second request I have recived, the first was 6 months ago and I turned it down. I have a book that I wrote and sell as a book and an e-book in a very niche market. My site is very high in google and recieves good traffic, selling about 35 books a week at £12.99

Firstly here is the email I recived today...

    Hello

I was wondering if you would be open to selling a private label license to your product ********. I enjoyed the content very much and would l like to be able to sell a similar product.

The license would essentially let me use your content in a product of my own in exchange for a one-time payment. It would also allow you to continue selling the product however you like.

We can obviously discuss the details, but first I wanted to see if this is something you would be interested in and how much you would want for such a license.

    Best wishes

    Mike Spencer

Can anyone advise on this, I am not 100% sure what he is wanting, to have full re-sale rights or just wants certain elements from the book. If he is wanting to use the info and reword the title of the book, then it would not be fair on anyone who had read it before. Also the book would be in direct competion.

Obviously he could pay me a certain amount and not have the customer base that I have and I could get paid well for something he just can't sell. The book also sells on ebay and that would be a no, no for him.

I know I need more info from him on this and his intentions, but before I do is it just right to turn him down flat or should I pursue it, I also would have no idea what to charge....So I really am looking for someone who could help and advise on this.

    Regards Paul

Little unsure myself what he wants to do. If he wants to use bits of your ebook then a one off fee of a couple of hundred maybe. If he wants to buy the re-selling rights then I've seen these for anywhere up to £2K. Also depends whether you sell him exclusive rights so he'll be the only other person selling your ebook or not. Exclusives for physical products including marketing info can run from £25k to £100k! Good luck!

yeah it sounds like you need to find out exactly what hes looking for. my only thought would be this...you own the product...you set the terms. you could make any restrictions you want. such as only sell the source but require that he re-name the product and not use the same graphics etc. that would protect your current cust. base and you to some extent. or maybe he just wants to excerpt you in which case you may just want to ask for links to you.
you could also try to work out a JV type thing with him. if your products "compliment" each other but don't compete directly why not aff. link each other?
find out what hes asking for first and then negotiate your wants or just say no thanks.
hope that helps a little - joel

Thanks for the advice, yes I need to find out more. I feel he wants control over it , which I am not going to give, it is written on health and is something that will be around for a long time and has a never ending shelf life as long as it is updated regular.

I do have the book in clickbank with o.k results. I want to get away from the e-book and have affiliate sites on the same subject sell it as a physical book. The trouble is I have never really looked into affiliate programs, some seem expensive, as the book would make the seller around £6 a book, I don't want to be paying fortunes out.

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks Paul

wow sounds like a cool book then.

you might offer a high-end figure and say take it or leave it...

but if you are making $500/week from it, you probably want to keep control over it.

now I'm curious what book it is!
