It's a directory of websites that have been manually reviewed by a real person, rather then just a list of links.

DMOZ is a Free web directory. If you are lucky then only you will get an approved listing in dmoz. Dmoz editors don't even have time to check pending listings.

When i started SEO, i heard that they approve only quality websites. So far i have submitted 20 websites in last 2 years and most of those sites are unique and quality ones. Not even a single site approval so far :-(

May Webmasters state that, DMOZ is dead...

DMOZ is just a directory, one of the old ones with great reputation .. but in the end it is just one of the many directories you can use to build backlinks from. The requirements to get listed on Dmoz back in the days were to have a good quality site built in order to get listed however I've heard many of the reviewers went rogue and started receiving unrelated "gifts" in order to get sites listed there...

Nowadays you can do just fine building backlinks from other places without getting listed on DMOZ....
