there are various types of social sites out there. there are social networking sites like myspace, facebook, linked in; web 2.0 sites like squidoo, hubpages; social bookmarking sites like digg, reddit, delicious, etc. while lot of those sites are nofollow these days (thanks to the spammers), some are still dofollow that pass pageranks and link juices to yor site. if you get your link on those pages, you will get pagerank transfer and some bonus traffic depending on where you submit, how you submit, and what you submit

I think most social media now are no longer do follow but they are helpful in away because it helps you gain traffic which is important not only in Adsense but other things as well
