Hi, I want simple help on following sentences as correct or incorrect: Company was founded in 2000. Company has been founded in 2000. Company was founded since 2000. Also which is the best sentence today? No extra or long discussion please, just reply to-the-point. Thanks.
The company was founded in 2000. sarahk's right: you should include the word The. Otherwise it's grammatically incorrect. Hope that helps!
Thanks Sarah & Patel, 'the' is not an issue, we can add it like let's say: The Company was founded in 2000. The Company has been founded in 2000. The Company was founded since 2000. Issue lies after 'company' & use of 'since' here. We believe that 1st & 2nd options are correct but 3rd one looks weird, so want to get clear answers as 'correct/incorrect'.
#2 is definitely not appropriate The company was founded in 2000 The company has been running since 2000 "Founded" relates to a point in time "Has been" and "since" relate to something that is ongoing They don't belong together
Yep, I agree with sarahk again. #2 doesn't work. To put it simply: "has been" shows something that's going on in the present/right now (like, "He has been jumping up and down on his bed all night"), but "founded" shows something that happened in the past. Like, "The ancient city of Rome was founded on a hill." If it's too confusing then why not go with something simpler, like "The company started in 2000" or "The company was established in 2000." Hope that helps.
@HKPatel7 makes a good point about using the word "established". "Founded" tends to imply the organisation being discussed is large and well respected - like the UN or the Guiding movement and is a bit pompous when used to describe a company. Now, that opinion might show a NZ bias (we like humility), and the country you are writing for might like people to be grandiose.
I didn't even think about that sarahk, but you're right. "Founded" does conjure up images of large, historic organizations. The only way to "naturally" use the word in a sentence would be at the very beginning, like, "Founded in January 2000, the company now employs over 100 full-time staff and has offices in over 20 countries...." Anyways, thanks for liking my post sarahk. Always nice to be appreciated. But for some reason I can't return the favor. Why is that? BTW, you're from New Zealand? I'm from Fiji! Love your cheese! (No joke.)
You have to receive 3 likes before you can return the favour. I lived in Fiji as a preschooler, have happy memories of the place. Would love to go back and do some mountain running - it looks amazing. Canada must be a very different experience - have you moved permanently?
Thanks for the info on the likes. And it's really great to meet someone else from Fiji since it's so rare. I was born there and moved to Canada when I was 8 and have been living here since. And yes it is a very different experience, climate and lifestyle wise. I'd love to visit New Zealand someday. It's so lush and beautiful.
Thanks for the detail. But in 2nd sentence, the use of 'has been' + '3rd form' is in use at a lot of places today as passive voice. You can replace 'founded' with 'established', 'created' etc. The point is using 3rd form here with 'has/have been'. Like if you see at forbes screenshot attached below, it will explain what we want to ask actually about this sentence. In recent style of English, it's being used at a lot of quality blogs/sites. Let's see the whole sentence: The company has been established/founded in 1990 by Mr. A.------Does it look fine?
