Hi all, Turned on my Pc today to find something very strange. I always thought the home page on a website has the highest PR by default. Today I entered one of my site's inner pages to find that it has a PR 4 (I have a Page Rank Display extension in my Chrome browser). Excited, I clicked to see what's going on in the Home page, but it was still at 3 I then verified this with other PR checkers I saw online... Any explanations? Does it mean the home page is on its way to getting PR 4? Or is it simply a matter of it not being indexed while the inner page was indexed. Any input would be highly appreciated Cheers, Mony
Yes this is very possible. If your inner page has a lot more links and more often viewed by visitors than your index page then it has the tendency to have a higher PR as compared to your home page or index page.
Thanks for the reply I definitively understand the logic, but I was under the impression that Google has an algorithm stating that no inner page can have a PR higher than the Home page... Do you think this has any impact on the home page whatsoever? Thanks again! Mony
Sure it is possible. It is rare as the majority of links point to the a site's home page. I have seen it on my sites where internal pages have been the same PR as the home.
Actually I see two options. First (most likely) , your inner page has more incoming links than your mainpage, perhaps also better "quality" content. Main page is penalized, resulting in lower PR (had that happen in the past to some test sites)
Yes it can, if your inner page is being linked more than your main page, and has backlinks with higher PR.
Every page is individual page, inner page can have higher PR than homepage, just because you have some high PR dofollow backlink point to your inner page
For me it also has happened, that inner pages have higher PR. I can just say that it is not a pleasant feeling at all, because then I have an idea that my site is not well enough developed, if there, for example, is just one inner page which has gained PR and others at the same time are standing just at the PR0. The most strange in my case was that inner page with higher PR even did not get a lot of traffic and I also I did not build a lot of links to it, so I did not understand completely what really happened and why Google liked exactly that particular inner page better than home page and others.
I've seen cases where subdomains have a higher pagerank than the main one...which I guess it's pretty similar to this - it's just the fact they get more or higher quality links
It has just happened to mine. I have a gadget from a directory to an inner page on my website, which somehow has increased the pagerank of that page more than the homepage.
I can provide you an example with my own site actually: http://factsonspace.com (PR-0) http://factsonspace.com/featured/future-space-travel/ (PR-1) To answer your question, yes. My source; the above.
of course its possible. because if you create links and do on page for that inner page then it will get rank and if you stop working with the main page then gradually it will decrease. its obvious.
Yes, it is possible. In the past, one of my blog which was pr4 on the homepage, had inner pages of pr5, pr6... so yes, it can happen.
Well it depends on the way you must have done your internet link building of the pages. At a very rare occasion will you see such type of sites, which obviously means that the in-links for that particular page is more than the homepage. You can also check out the high PR inner page, what all links are directed from this page and make sure you have a proper link direction to your homepage
Yes. It is possible that your inner page has higher PR than the home page. It happens that your inner page is having lots of links and good information so that the visitors visit your inner page.
Ofcourse it's possible that an inner page can outrank the index page, it all depends on a number of factors such as backlinks and the authority of those backlinks, and many others the search engines won't let us privy to
Surely is possible..! If your inner page is has more number of backlink on Google and has more traffic coming on it, it can have higher page rank than your homepage.
Think of it this way: let's say — this is a never-happen example, just for discussion — that you suddenly get links to your "inner page XYZ" from ABC, NBC, CBS, Harvard, Yale, and Adobe. The PR of that specific inner page is going to skyrocket and will almost certainly end up with a higher PR than the home page.
