    Hi there Digital Forum Folks:

I hope all is well today. Could you be kind enough to answer something that puzzles me about Search Engine Optimization software and those that are actual people that charge for the services.

Forgetting about money for a moment, let’s even pretend it is exceptionally reasonable. How much of high traffic at a website can be calculated to the SEO software and personnel behind the scenes and how much can be attributed to hard work and having something that people would be interested in anyway such as Coca Cola, Manchester United Soccer, New York Yankees Baseball, Wholesale Car Prices, etc.

Maybe I am being skeptical but if somebody were that good with the ability to add large traffic to a site, wouldn’t the more people they help the greater risk they could hurt their own URL? Does the teacher ever want the student to know as much or more?

Thank you for your help and have the best day,
    Craig Fenton

Everything starts from scratch or zero, even Coca Cola invests regularly on marketing and branding (as you would notice in TV Ads)... So despite building up a brand that people identify easily in a real world, you still have to market and keep it alive in peoples memory, so that when the time comes if I have to buy - I ask for Coca Cola instead of Pepsi.

SEO is identical process of keeping content fresh so that not only existing, but also new visitors are 'driven' to sites - and an exercise pretty similar to real world marketing...
My views - appreciate that you asked this question!

    Thx

Hmmm...search engine optimisation is not the end, just a means to an end. If you're gonna compare 2 sites with identical content, but one of them is SEO'ed while one is not, the one which has been SEO'ed will quite surely rank higher than the one which has no SEO. But then in real life, the content, links in are all different for different sites. I believe the SEO is just to help them be more competitive and even the playing field.

    OK..that said..I'm no SEO expert :D

    Hi,

seo does work without doubt, that is: if you follow the rules of a search engine it will show your web page to more people and that included tags, content, sitemap etc.

Pepsi etc are known brands and so would ned to rely on seo to get their site seen and that is the difference. I use seo because I am not a known brand but using seo I can get my site seen by lots of people searching for a paricular thing.

seo is about keeping aware of the rules of the game and using them as effectively as possible,

To do business on the internet, you must do SEO. It take time, money and hard work. It will pay for it's self in sales.

I can't say you MUST do SEO (I have some sites that are successful purely on PPC) but it is very efficient if you do the leg work to get the rankings.

To answer your question more specifically, "Are search engine ranking pages(SERPs) more driven by popularity of a product/brand/content or by SEO tactics?"

I would have to say the later. Why? Well SERPs are based on 2 things. On page SEO and off page SEO with the later having more influence than the former. On page SEO is ranked lower mostly because you can always just copy another site's content and structure to rank well if you wanted to compete with that site.

Off site SEO, which mostly involves other sites linking to yours is a bit harder to come by. (Sans paid links) Google knows that people don't link to crappy content so if you have something worthwhile linking to you will get those backlinks and thus your SERP rankings.

Most SEO companies/software push obtaining links from directories and/or article submissions. This artificially increases your back links (or link popularity) Google is wise to this and is trying to kill it off as an SEO tactic.

    I hope that helps.
