Can ads open in a new window?

Is it possible to have the ads on my pages open in a new window so that my visitors don't leave my site when they click a coop ad?

Is there any possibility that this feature might be available in the future? It would sure be nice (although it's also nice as it is). And it seems like it might be as pretty simple to add it.

You can try some JavaScript(ing)... to open all offsite links in a new window (not just ad network ads).

To me, and I would guess most Webmasters. It is important that the visitor not leave my site unless they make a conscious decision to do so.

If they are clicking on the ad network link it means they have found something (the anchor text) more interesting than your content.

    Shawn,

I understand why you wouldn;t want the ads to be opened in the new window, but there is a but....

I don't mind ads being opened in the same window on my forum, because as was said the visitor must have something interesting.
However from the seo point of view there is an advantage to ads being opened in a new window.
It may seem as an off the wall false statement about ranking factors, so let me explain.

I have conducted quite a lot of tests on this. My test are done in polish, but there is a thread about it on PhilC's forum as well. http://www.webworkshop.net/seoforum/viewtopic.php?p=35894#35894 is the link to my post about the target="_blank" attribute and ranking factors.

If you don't want to read through the posts there I'll give a short example here, plus the links have changed a little bit since that thread.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=testnatarget&btnG=Google+Search is First Phrase Serps = the destination url kontrola-dostepu.pl doesn't have the target attribute in the code and does not show up in the rankings.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=tojesttylkotest&btnG=Search is Second Phrase Serps = the destination url herb.00freehost.com has the target attribute in the code and does show up in the rankings.

The test links are on www.optymalizacja.com

This is only an example, but there were many other tests done on my forum (in polish) and each and every one of those tests proved that target attribute is needed for the anchor text to have value in the rankings.

Since we all here want to not only promote our websites but also gain some rankings from this network I would really appreciate it if you took this under consideration.

Ufff.... Quite a long post :)

P.S. This is my first post, so the links are not live

Is your site really that bad you have to use tactics like that?
If your site is good enough, they will be back

I think SE algo's could downgrade links which open in a new window (target=_blank) - its possible.

Is it against the TOS of the coop network to have links open in a new window? Just curious. I never really gave it much thought since the links on my site are pretty irrelevant to the content of my site, so I figure the links are nothing more than se food.

You can't modify the ad code if that's what you're asking.

Yes, that's what I was asking. It would be very easy to do if someone really wanted to do so. I'm more than satisfied with the current configuration. Now I just have to add more content to get a higher weight. :)

Yep... someone could do it, but if I see it or someone reports them, their site would be banned from the network.

Cant you just specify a base target attribute for the page? then have the on page links targeting _top

You could, but then what about links to other pages within your own site? They, too, would open in new windows as well.
