Can a .tk rank for terms especially competitive terms? Does anybody know an example?

How about JazzGuitar.be. It ranks on the front page (#2 spot) on Google.com for ""jazz guitar"

Never! .TK is a simple redirection url service it never gives your any SEO Impact... the corresponding redirecting link can expect something from Search Engine..

.Be is Regional Domain Extension of Belgium :)

Well your effort would have to be doubled. Having that against 10$ for a .com domain isn't that worth it. You are even better off using a .info domain - 2$.

The .tk is an exact keyphrase match. So it might be less work then you think. Just like
JazzGuitar.be is an exact keyphrase match for "Jazz Guitar". Plus, "Jazz Guitar" is a
highly competitive term. The site JazzGuitar.be is only around 6 years old.

There are no .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz exact matches for the keyphrase I want. One guy
is selling the .info for around $5,000 but I don't have it. The .biz is selling for $200.

I'm tempted buy that one. But there might be no difference SEO wise in a .biz and .tk
I'd rather have the .biz but the .tk was too good to pass up.

The keyphrase I am targeting is nearly as competitive as "Jazz Guitar" and very profitable.
However, a one year old .com made it to the front page in one year. This .com had the
keyphrase but had 3 extra numbers. It's backlinks are around 1000.

However, this .com with the extra numerals is only around # 7 on the front page. I need
something to go to the top.
