Can a sub-domain gain PR?

I just want to ask that I don't have a registered domain name till now and using free hosting and sub-domain. I have read from some where that sub-domains can't get PageRank. Is it correct? Should I have a registered domain name to gain PR?

    Why not?
PR has nothing to do with the domain, only backlinks do matter.

Yes, and I would jump off the free hosting too. Paid hosting is cheap these days.

Of course you will get a PR.
    It' doesn't matter you're on a subdomain.

However keep in mind free hosting always suck.
If you're serious in what you're doing online, get a real host + your own domain and develop a powerful site.

As ablaye has said, PR is based on individual pages rather than domains or sub-domains. The more links you have to a page, the better -- especially if they're relevant.
