I thought I had some idea of how google page rank works. I registered a domain about 6 months ago. Its a .us domain. Its never been used and on my nameserver never even had a zone file for the domain for dns. I finally have allocated time to work on the site and it my amazement its a pr7. I find ZERO backlinks in google (link and only 1 when doing the site: command I checked future pagerank to make sure googletoolbar was not messed up and it shows pr7's on everything... Does anyone have any clue what can cause this and how long will it last? realizing how much i dont know about pr, S$
I register alot of domains and put them in que to be done. They vary alot. This domain had to do with spam prevention. (contains spam in the domain). Its basically a OPT IN spam list where you can test your email for spam. (you submit emails you want to be spammed). I designed it basically because I could not find any service like it. I needed to test my mail system again and again for users but do not get much spam myself. So I create a test email and submit it for spamming. That is what this domain is for.
I have pm'd it to you minstrel. I really dont want to display it for the public... atleast until I have figured out the anomaly.
Checked out the URL. It shows today's cache, but zero backlinks in Google. Yahoo shows 40 BLs... mainly from your other domain which ranks so well for all of your industry terms. I think your other domain which shows PR5 is actually much higher, a PR8 for all we know. Google tends to downplay displayed toolbar PR. New sites, however, imediately jumping to PR6 have been observed all across the board. It seems like this domain is displaying it's true unfiltered internal PR, whereas your main domain (the one linking it) is showing a drastically downplayed PR.
I see zero backlinks for that URL you PM'd me using the link: query and only the one page using the site: query. However, enter the URL in quotation marks as a Google search term and I find 50 entries, all of them for ringtone sites. Your URL is no longer listed on any of the ones that I checked but Google's cache shows a text link to your site cached April 22, 2005. It looks like the page was in some sort of link exchange network in April, at the time of the last PR update. Correction: Most were ringtone sites -- there were a few which weren't but contained what look like the same ringtone network text ad links.
Minstrel, he owns all those ringtone domains. the pimp one has an alexa of 4,000.. very established domain with over 20k unique traffic a day judging from that alexa.
One of the cached pages (the "pimp" one) shows this: So I don't think there's any real mystery here. There were at one time a number of backlinks to the site in some sort of Coop type network perhaps or he was interlinking sites using that URL and/or anchor text. Get lots of links to a page and your PR goes up... the links to the page no longer exist but they did at the time of the last PR update. Am I missing something?
I kind of run my own co-op between about 600 different ips/hostnames. The weird thing is none of them are above pr5. I just didnt think it was possible being linked from a pr5 and less could give you a pr7 even tho the site had no dns entry until about 30 hours ago. I dont like things I cant explain. I mean its weird... I put up this site put 1 line of text and it shows as a pr7 on my toolbar.. just kind of wigged me out. I REALLY appriciate your guys time and help on this. I am going to proceed to develop the site as planned and give you 2 (spdude, minstrel) a targeted link for your help (if you would like one). S$
The thing which I was referring to earlier is that even the "pimp one" is only a PR5 on it's home page. This one being a PR7 would be because Google assigned it its true unfiltered internal PR (PR7), based on the quality of the links which were pointing to it at the time of the update. The pimp one is a PR8 internally, if you ask me, but PR has been downplayed to PR5. This is the only way to explain it, if you ask me. The rest of the sites in his network are garbage domains used to boost the pimp site. One thing which can be deduced from this is old sites with tuns of backlinks and only showing PR5 for instance should rest assured that toolbar PR is downplayed and the power of their pages is more that of a PR8. Google just doesn't want to show it. Edit: I posted above your post. Sure, would love a link from that page
I never turn down a link! As for the page having higher PR than the pages linking to it, I'm not sure there's any theoretical reason why that wouldn't happen. PR is, after all, some function of the number of backlinks and the PR of those backlinks, so theoretically a large enough number of even PR1 or PR2 pages linking to you should get you PR7 or PR8. No?
There was a site a while ago asking about a very similar situation. Before the site was put in place, the domain displayed cpannel which has a pr7. That site subsequently displayed a pr7 with no links of significance to speak of. Oweing to the fact that cpannel has a 7. (or was it 8 at the time... can't remember). What showed up when you entered the domain name before you put your site in place? A not found error or some kind of place keeper page from your host?
Only if you use it to describe yourself. The term in itself isn't an oxymoron... It's like the term "SEO expert": there are some people who legitimately deserve that description but they probably don't refer to themselves that way -- those who do probably aren't.
