I'm calling out to all of us who were kids in 2000 (especially all the 14-17 year olds on here). There is a new book by Michael Graham calling our generation the dumbest generation yet due to our dependence on the internet. Michael Graham’s new book The Dumbest Generation (Or Don’t Trust Anyone Under 30) is a outcry from previous generations asking why are our children today so dumb? News sources like CBS News say children’s recall of historical facts and figures is at an all time low. Various studies show that this generation does not know the dates to the Civil War, or who their congressman is, but really, aren’t they missing the point? All this hullabaloo about children not knowing as much as their parents did is neglecting to mention one thing that gives today’s children an edge, the internet. As a student myself, I have seen the shift from the dates and names I was told to memorize in fifth grade to the concepts I was expected to understand in high school. The invention of the internet has made our kids smarter and well rounded. No longer do our children need to memorize a list of dates to be considered smart. Now days, children need to be able to explain the process of cellular mitosis, find the integral, and speak another language. When you put these added burdens on children, you have to expect something else to give way, and since names and dates can be looked up an a computer or cell phone in under three minutes, why not let those be the first to go? But what about the younger generation? Computers did not become widely used in the classroom until I was about eleven, but today’s children have had computers and cell phones around since birth, what are they learning? Well, some would have you think that the prevalence of the internet is making them even dumber, but it is obvious these people have not been in a public school classroom in years... Well i agree with that guy This generation is fu... up Many imbecils/idiots due to staying online and wasting time with craps like Myspace facebook etc .... The generations that come will be more dumber i am sure about this
Okay, my generation spends time on Myspace and Facebook, what about the love ins of the 60s and 70s? What about the recreational drug use? What about the horrible hair of the 80's? Don't judge a generation by their recreation, we are talking about academics (hence the dumb in the title of the book).
I kind of agree, this generation is screwed up. Although some civilisations used to think that the most intelligent people were the ones who go through education in the first decade of the new century.
