I'm almost overwhelmed with everything a new person to this has to learn, but trying to have some fun with it at the same time. My question is: Top 5 marketing tips or processes to follow with a new site to get traffic started, without spending $$ ?? Anyone have some suggestions ? Thanks !

You shouldn't be thinking about affiliate schemes or making money at this stage. Establish an audience first, submit to some quality directories in your niche and then ensure you have well written content that people want to link to. How's that for starters?
1. Create Sitemap and ping it 2. Add quality, keyword driven content split into themed categories 3. Use Socialmarker and Pingoat 4. Collect email addresses even if you don't yet have a course to offer (the promise of one to come and a freebie is enough to start listbuilding) 5. Generate consistent targeted traffic without blowing your budget - hire a web traffic assistant or do it yourself
Visit imanswers.com, read lots of free ebooks from top mailing lists (Reed Floren, Fabian Tan, Travis Sago etc.). Subscribe to a few blogs (InfectedByBugs,ProBlogger etc.). Learn all the basics and dabble with a few niches. Don't waste money early on until you start seeing profit, then ramp up your budget.
