I have written an article about the pricing for directory submissions, compared to text links.
You can find the article here.
Feel free to say your opinion.
I hope some people will find it useful.

Interesting read, you are concluding that a directory listing has around 50% more value than a text link?

I don't think this part is true (below): My understanding is that the search engine does look at the content of the page and if it relevant to the text link.

One thing for sure is that if 'G' does not de-value directory listings they are getting way more valuable with the offering of more features for customers, like deep links and well SEO'ed detail pages.

A text links main advantage as you mentioned is that it has a better chance of bringing traffic but one thing you didn't really account for is that traffic enhancing text links tend to cost much more than just regular text links. Sometimes 100%-1000% more.

The whole thing is quite complicated and someone could probably write a huge in-depth thesis on the entire link building market.

I agree with this part. Of course there are some pages with very high traffic and links there cost $$$ monthly even if PR is 0.
I am talking about links placed for PR and SEO.
It is a very complicated subject but what I am trying to do is make a quick reference table with fair prices.
I didn't say that a directory listing costs 50% than a text link.
I said that it can go up to 50% more than a text link price (with same PR), according to what a directory has to offer.

    Thank you for your comments.
    All comments are much appreciated.

    Neither did I

    I said:

I guess it really depends on which directory vs. which text links. There is such a wide range of backlinking options nowadays.

For me I try and combine both because I don't want to put all my SEO eggs in one basket.

I think there should be a little more gap between PR4 and PR5. It's pretty easy to get PR4, so the price of PR5 should be higher I think.

    nice attempt.

however, think that there are factors that cannot be computed like reputation of a website and the owner. Also, there is a HUGE range of websites in each PR. Quality of backlinks and number of backlinks are just some differentiating factors, which need to be considered as well.

All in all, as traditional economics would have it, price is a function of supply and demand. Thus, perhaps it may be better to define your prices in terms of variables rather than constants.

I used the average prices someone has to pay for a simple text link, as base.
I didn't take traffic into consideration, although I know it plays a great role.
I tried to present the value of links according to PR only.
