Byte vs bit

    I tried to find out about that on wiki but I fail.
    so bit is - smallest amount of data in computer?
    byte is - smallest amount of data in computer after bit? the term byte stems from bite, as in the smallest amount of data a computer could bite at once - I don't understand this
