Someone just went out and bought the exact ".com" name (VERY RARE name) of a female fitness model client of mine.

I want to contact the owner of the domain name but its registered privately.

Is there any way to bypass this and find out who actually bought the domain?

I wonder if there is a way to even force that person to give it back as the name is her "Brand", she does business with that name it its a VERY unique name to begin with.

    any ideas?

    thanks

Privacy Protection details can be revealed with a court order. Many registrars will disclose the information if they are contacted by an attorney who is claiming infringement. If this is your clients brand that she uses for business, it seem unusual that she didn't already purchase the .com. It really depends on whether or not this person who registered the domain has a legitimate claim to it or intends to use it to profit off of your clients goodwill or squat on the domain. You can recover a domain that was registered in bad faith, but the process is going to cost thousands of dollars - and much more if you have to sue them. If they want the domain, I would be far cheaper to pay them a thousand dollars or so then go through a WIPO or other legal action. A good IP attorney runs about $300 an hour on up.

    Thanks for the info.

She never set up an online business with her name as she was using her Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and other websites she was a guest blogger for and modeled for. She contacted me to make a website for her and that is when I found out that someone has recently purchased hername.com

Is the domain being used for anything or is it displaying as a parked page. It may have been purchased only, to later, sell it to your client at a significant profit. I've had this happen to me. I now make securing the domain name number one. Even if there is the slightest possibility of using it, get it.

The first time the domain was available but I decided to do a test drive on blogger. I used the same name on blogger. With in hours some one had registered the domain name. A few months later they tried to sell it to me for a couple of thousand dollars. I waited and watched the renewal date for the domain. It wasn't renewed and the second it was available I snagged it up for 10 bucks.

I still have 2 I'm watching for one of the LLC's I created. Both domain names are relevant. One I found as a parked page that soon after became a "this domain for sale page". I contacted the person but the price at this moment is way out my reach. The second I saw was taken also. I'm not sure how this person got my email address but they contacted me. I have privacy on everything. They have offered to sell it to me for a profit but at a reasonable price I can handle. I was skeptical at first but checked the company out and they are legit. I may take them up on it tomorrow. I know this happens all the time but now I'm going to be doing things a little different to avoid it in the future. Live and learn.

Is there any text on the parked page like "This domain is for sale. Request quote". It might not be real obvious. If not I suspect it will soon. But...

It might not be on that page but it may already be available. If you can find out where they registered the domain. It may show on the whois page even if the owner has privacy. It may even show some where on the parked page.

I would go to that registrar (whatever it is Go Daddy, NameCheap, Enom etc) and put the domain name in their search box (where the domain is registered) like you're just searching/checking if the domain is available to register. It will come back saying not available but some places will also say something like "Let us get help you get this domain" or offer a service to contact and negotiate an offer to buy for a small fee or percentage of the total. They can contact the person because the person used them as the registrar. If it doesn't show this type of service after the search check if the registrar has a service to do this elsewhere on their site. If you don't see it anywhere and they have a sitemap link on the bottom of their homepage you may find it listed on the sitemap page. Check their help or FAQ section or even ask support. It all depends how interested you may be in getting the specific domain.

I recommend a least checking it out because sometimes these people sell the domains they collect to another person/company that charges even more for the domain.
