I think shoemoney sums it up pretty well... also, we should make a webpage called something like photblogmatisverylameican'trememberhisnameisitphotblogmattorphotomatt.com then get it rank 1 for search term matt... lolcakes...
It's not going to kill link sales - it'll just make themes.wordpress.net a less visited place, as people wanting themes will have to look elsewhere for them! I for one will still allow sponsored themes to be promoted on my website: www.wpskins.org
All the other sites are going to get much more Wordpress themes and everything will go as it was before just it will happen on other sites.
Bad move by Wordpress, alot of people will stop designing for the platform. The theme im designing at the moment i'll just sell instead of releasing it for free and creating 1000 plus members of the Wordpress userbase happy.
The only reason why there are so many themes around and why people keep on producing them is because they get something out of it. Either SEO or sponsor's money. When this is disallowed wordpress will simply get no more themes. When bloggers will see the lack of new themes they will go somewhere else.
I posted my thoughts on Shoemoney's blog, but to add here, it all became a joke when peopel started to buy a theme to be designed, and then slap 6 sponsored links on it, hoping to get loads of linkbacks. If people had left alone at 1 or 2 links then people would not be having this discussion, but as usual people got link greedy and spoilt it for everyone else. I'd not have expected anything different from shoemoney, he's a wise marketeer and being controversial in your blog gets you traffic, and earns you $$$s
After reading the post, it kinda makes sense. WordPress sooner or later will have big companies trying to infiltrate the network...dunno if it will be Google or other but i'm sure something will happen. As for Sponsered links it's all very relative.
