Buying websites for Adsense

Discussion in 'Sites' started by D'oh, Aug 13, 2005.

I'm now making a good income with Adsense and affiliate links (quit my job :) ) and I now am thinking of diversifying by buying other websites and putting adsense on them.

What do you think is the best place (or way) to find websites for sale?

Secondly, what is the best way to estimate the value of a website?

Some factors I can think of are:
    1. Amount of natural traffic (i.e. position in SERPs, links to other sites, pagerank)
    2. Type of traffic (i.e. what keywords are they interested in)
    3. Quantity and quality of content on site
    4. How well optimised competitors in SERPs are
    5. Potential of site to be optimised for generate more web traffic
    6. Performance of existing advertising

make a search on public domain directory and get
statistics for a website that you would like to buy
before the owner abandoned it, like how much traffic,
    pages, etc.

Once you're satisfied, then buy them and place
    your adsense ad!

    Lister,

Most webmasters here are regulars and they tend to be professionals in this field. There is no use in advertising your own site here. :)

So my suggestion is you do not advertise your own site here. Especially not in this category of this forum. No offends though.

Dmoz can be a good hunting ground when looking for sites for me, old established sites with no adsense on them and that obviously havent been updated for a long time, it can pay to be pro-active as in hunting down good sites and approach the owners.

I'd look on DP. Check with Google to make sure the site hasn't already been banned. Also from my experience I'd keep adsense off a forum, there is alot of ad blindness there.

    1) site must be listed on dmoz.org
    2) user profile of the website
    3) pagerank
    4) hit

You know, I'd not be interested so much in how a site is performing when you buy it, but the potential it has. The "Quantity and quality of content on site" would be number 1. After all, if it's a quality content site that is already popular then the price you pay may be over the top. Whereas a little site you can work with to improve that already has a good content base would be a gem.

check the buy/sell forum here. There are alot of sites for sale in there that are gems. Also the dp posse will spot a shady deal fast if someone is trying to make a quick buck

I was recently browsing ebay - i did a search for adsense, and there are tons of sites that are for sale,... they claim to make you lots of money and some of the sites are legit because i opened up google and search for the site - and the site had 10 pages of listings... so i just knew it was legit... but some of the sites are about 500$ - even $30 ... anyway ive got a question, you said you quit your job.... because you're mkaing tons with adsense - why are you asking such a question about buying an adsense site? o'experienced one? lol if you need any high paying keywords and a few adsense tips you can go to this page on my site: www theblahbrain com/adsensekeywords.htm - just paste it in your browser!

    I hope I helped.

Yeah, as I said I need to diversify and I never bought a site before :). It seems like a good way to reinvest my profits (i.e. better return on investment than a bank account or shares).

So google enforces bans for whole websites rather than for an individual publisher?

Has anyone tried putting their adsense code on a site that used to run ads for a banned publisher? What happens - does google ban you by association? or do your ads just not run? :)

What about if you tell google there is a change of ownership? :)

Google has in the past "blacklisted" domains from participating in adsense however in there historical weight patent they say that a domain will be re-evaluated each time its ip address changes. Who knows if that plays into this at all or if it will ever be implemented.

One piece of advice would be to stick to areas where you have some expertise. If you already have several succesful sites in a particular segment, I would first look at buying a site in that same area just to get comfortable with the whole process and lessen the risk if you make any mistakes.

It will probably be a good lesson in what is and is not worthwhile in a website since you can compare it directly to what you are already doing. Then as you get that knowledge you can branch out into segments you might be less familar with.
