I am currently searching for a new computer to purchase and have been looking at a customized Dell XPS system. However, I am confused about which processors will be able to run 64 bit apps and Windows Vista 64 bit. Currently, the following processors are offered by dell: Pentium® 4 Processor 670 with HT Technology (3.80GHz, 800 FSB) [add $500 or $15/month1] Pentium® D Processor 930 with Dual Core Technology (3.00GHz, 800FSB) [Included in Price] Pentium® D Processor 940 with Dual Core Technology (3.20GHz, 800FSB) [add $50 or $2/month1] Pentium® D Processor 950 with Dual Core Technology (3.40GHz, 800FSB) [add $150 or $5/month1] Pentium® D Processor 960 with Dual Core Technology (3.60GHz, 800FSB) [add $400 or $12/month1] Pentium® 965 Extreme Edition w/ Dual Core Tech (3.73GHz, 4MB Cache) [add $1,000 or $30/month1] Code (markup): Intel states that the 9 series has EM64T Technology, described here: http://www.intel.com/cd/ids/developer/asmo-na/eng/296744.htm?prn=Y However, when I did a live chat with Dell support (twice) they stated that the 9 series chip IS NOT 64 bit; they said that only the extreme edition is 64 bit chip. However, Intel explains that Intel chips with EM64T technology can run 64 bit application and Operating Systems. Can anyone explain this?
Yes, very simply put, get an AMD Opteron. Intel is playing catch up and you will likely get a buggy first generation processor from them if you go cutting edge. They have a history of such things that needs to be considered. Plus, after months of service, I've come to realize, my Dell computer sucks. In 15, or more, years, it's the first one I've owned that I didn't build myself. I used to sell and service computers I hand built before I retired to this stuff. I'm probably gonna try HP next. I have put 6 of them in a clients office I still consult with and have had zero problems.
