It would be nice to have a contract, but if you're talking small orders ($4, $40, etc), then it's probably not worth the trouble. What could arise and what would a contract solve?

For those small orders, just spell out everything in an email and get an agreement. Some advertisers have terms you need to agree to.

market junction is right. Although we have a few large contacts for a few sites we link with. My partner is a lawyer so having contracts drawn up costs me £0 anyway.

For small contracts the idea is making sure:

    1) You're dealing with a reputable member of a community that has a good feedback record (on DP iTrader)
    2) both parties know what to expect from each other.

Then no big problems should arise.

In other words make sure that screwing each other would be worth less than the chance of gaining some bad reputation and therefore loosing business, not only to each other, but also within the community...

There are tons of guys there who actually do not honour the terms of the agreement. They do this because they know that the buyer won't take legal; action for such a small sum as it is neither worth the time nor money.

But still, follow what UCA said. Experience is the best teacher and with time, you will know whether to trust a person or not.
