Buying links can seriously damage your rankings

Many of us on this forum have paid for links but only recently I have found out that it is against Googles rules.

Google are now seeking those sites that sell links and also who are buying them.

But I'm really buying a advertisement on another site, not just a link. So advertising on other websites is against googles rules.

Buying advertising space on a website is not wrong. The same thing is done in magazines, newspapers, radio, television, movie theatres, the sides of a bus, billboards, etc etc

What Google has a problem with is when people buy links in order to manipulate the SERPs. Now, how they will be able to determine the intent of the link buyer is another question!

I think Google are really searching for sites that are buying links to increase their ranking. So if you pay for 6 links and the website you purchased them from display 'buy PR6 links for $30' then it is obvious to Google you are trying to increase your rankings.

I also have a problem with Googles method of tracking down these sites. They are asking us to report sites selling and buying links.
This will soon become a problem to both Google and site owner as this is open to abuse buy ruthless webmasters attempting to cut down other related competitive sites.

I agree. The whole PageRank system is inherently flawed anyway. I think it needs to be done away with. It was just a gimmick in the first place in my opinion.

I agree completely. They're opening up a big can of worms on this one. I could see some lawsuits come out of this, if suddenly some sites drop off the SERPs. Google should/would have to explain why. Was it because some competitor did something bad? What if it was a former employee of the business trying stir up trouble?

Sorry bud but you are wrong. Adsense and Adwords is not going anywhere, it's here to stay. The majority of people who buy links do it to increase their rankings and that's what Google doesn't like.

That is a very interesting point. Matt C actually mentions adding your domain to Yahoo, BOTW, and DMOZ as a good thing to do. The first two require a fee for a review. This, to me, is buying a link.

If Google only views it as the "review fee" then what about blogs that do paid site reviews or the PayPerPost.com site (which I think is a good thing).

Paying for a link on the side or toward the top of a page could very well be an honest advertising option. Look at Text-Link-Ads.com! They advertise on Harvard's university paper.

    <sigh>

that statement is bs, off course everyone try to increase traffic that is why google has adword ...oh my god!!!!! Many of us who buy link in Dp is cheaper then adwords. therefore google doesn't like it, thanks for Dp w/ sale links thread. google has lost like 100000000000000000000000 dollars :) ...

they are not going after individual sites because someone reported them. they are using the reports to tweak the algorithm that can detect when sites are abusing link sales

Honestly you need to learn a few things before you start calling my statements bullshit.

Google doesn't like people buying links because it MANIPULATES their natural search results.

Buying links will never replace Adwords. PPC is instant targeted traffic.

mOrtal is right - PPC and link buying for rankings are two very different things.

so what is the different between sell links and exchange links with somone? to me they are both the same. therefore, they are both illegal then?

i do sell links to people when i need money to pay my google adword.....it soo freaky expensive to use adword..

anyways in my opinion google prevent us to sell links beacuse it damage their adword..

If their aim is to protect adwords , then they might as ban any site that has a link on it. Link building and selling links is no different in my opinion. Some people are getting a little power crazy.
