Buying High Da sites with questionable Backlinks

Whatup! Wanting to buy sites that have pretty awesome Da And Pa, as well as trust and citation flow, but I suspect some of these sites may have been link farms before they expired. They are all indexed and healthy. I just started out in seo, and my first money site got slapped from what I suspect was one of the pr sites. My question is can a pr site with questionable backlinks get your money site slapped? Thanks!

Generally speaking, a websites own link profile (that in turn links to you) CANNOT have a negative effect on your site. Matt Cutts himself did a quick Q&A video on this topic some time ago - and the general rule of thumb is you have nothing to worry about.

The question isn't the links so much, but the webmaster's past activities. Is there a pattern of manipulation, spam, etc? If so, then avoid. Also avoid reliance on numbers and instead do your own manual investigations.

You say that you are new so the best advice you can be given (the short version) is start out fresh and always remain audience-focused rather than search engine.

Hi mate. Google used to say that having links from "unsafe neighbourhoods" would not affect your ranking. But post-Penguin, their comments have shown they have backtracked on that a bit. So you can't be too careful!

To see what has hit your site it's good, first, to look at your backlink profile.

To do this you need to harvest the maximum number of backlinks to your site that you can.

The best single tool to do this at the moment is undoubtedly ahrefs - it simply gives you more backlinks to a given site than any other tool.

    https://ahrefs.com

But you need all the back links you can possibly get hold of, so use any tool you can find, or have access to, so you can make one huge list. The two next-best tools (in terms of the number of backlinks they will give you) are Majestic SEO, then SEO Spyglass.

You can get piddling numbers of backlinks from other sources such as Webmaster Tools, Backlinkwatch (which gives you 10% of the ahrefs links), etc.

You can either sign up to these tools for the shortest time you can, or use the free versions where possible to download a limited subset of your backlinks if you have no budget. At least this will give you general picture. Some info is better than no info.

If you invest in SEO PowerSuite (which consists of four excellent tools) you not only get SEO Spyglass but you also get another tool called Website Auditor which will also give you a lot of useful information about your site.

    http://www.seo-powersuite.com/

Having grabbed your backlinks and analysed them using these tools you are now looking for a few key criteria such as:

    - How many are from unique domains? (Too many from the same domain will get you a hit)
    - What percentage of the backlinks use identical anchor text? (Too high a percentage gets you a hit.)
    - What percentage have your website URL as a backlink? (If this is too low then it looks unnatural – you get hit. Also, you should have a mixture – e.g. some with http:/yourwebsite.com, some with www and some without.

And so on – you get the picture. You need to see a natural looking backlink pattern.

This is the only way you can tell why you have been hit. And once you look at the backlink pattern and analyse it then, nine times out of 10, it's pretty obvious why.

Once you've done that you'll know what you need to do to balance things up again.

    Indexed Links
It's good to apply this analysis both to your indexed links – which are the ones Google knows about – and also, separately, to your backlinks which have not been indexed by Google.

This is useful because getting some of the non-indexed links indexed can be a quick way to balance up your backlink profile if it looks a bit spammy. Good trick eh?

You won't find many people telling you this sort of information because, simply, most people don't actually know about it! So get ahead of the crowd. It's really interesting see your site in the way Google does - through your backlinks.

Matthew Woodward has the best tutorial I've seen on analysing your backlink profile. It's in video and transcript. He's a knowledgeable guy:
    http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/tu...acklink-profile-for-current-future-penalties/

So, if you want to know why your site has been hit you've got a bit of work to do! If you do it, the best of luck with analysing your backlink profile.

Hmm, the question I would ask is whether the links from that PR site are going to help you in any way.
I suspect Google simply discounts links from PR sites, most of which are nofollow anyway.
It's even spelled out in their Guidelines https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en
    If you get:
this many look like you are trying to boost your search ranking in this way, and even get you penalized.

Thanks for all the answers guys, I found a simple way to figure this out, which is to create a subdomain like example.test.com, then create a 2.0 on it and rank for a keyword like cringlezipidipidoo, and see if the page tanks or ranks.
