    Hello,
Late I was looking on a domain which was suppose to expire on 11th April 2012, but now I am a bit confused when the domain will be available to register. I didn't register any backorder for this domain and I dont want to cuz it costs ten times more than normal registration.

    Whois Before Expire Date:
Registrar: DIRECTI INTERNET SOLUTIONS PVT. LTD. D/B/A PUBLICDOMAINREGISTRY.COM
    Whois Server: whois.PublicDomainRegistry.com
    Referral URL: http://www.PublicDomainRegistry.com
    Status: clientTransferProhibited
    Expiration Date: 2012-04-11
    Creation Date: 2011-03-02
If this domain is not renewed by April 12th, 2012 it will be deleted.

    Whois After Expire Date:

Registrar: DIRECTI INTERNET SOLUTIONS PVT. LTD. D/B/A PUBLICDOMAINREGISTRY.COM
    Whois Server: whois.PublicDomainRegistry.com
    Referral URL: http://www.PublicDomainRegistry.com
    Status: clientTransferProhibited

    Expiration Date: 2013-03-02
    Creation Date: 2011-03-02
    Last Update Date: 2012-04-11

    Status:LOCKED

Information Updated: Fri, 13 Apr 2012 18:17:09 UTC

Snapnames caught the domain on 12th April and said that it will be "Available Soon" for bidding. But on 13th April the domain was not available anymore. Also the whois info said the expire date changed to 2013-03-02.

The domain clearly expired but did some one register the domain right after expiring is that possible?

    Thanks in Advanced

I usually check the WHOIS. If it says anything other than pendingDelete then it generally means it has been caught by another person.

Following the expiration date, there is a redemption period (usually 30 days), followed by a Pending Delete period (usually 5 days).
This article does a good job of explaining the various stages:
When Does an Expired Domain Name Become Available?
I would keep an eye on the WhoIs info and watch for the changing status.

Yup - 99% likely that the original owner had it expire accidentally. When they noticed the site wasn't working any longer, they went back and renewed it at their registrar.

There is a possibility that the registrar itself or some related company has extended (renewed) the registration. I know a person that hasn't renewed a domain name for years with the idea to drop it, yet the name is still registered and unavailable and still showing his data (names, email, etc.).

I watched a domain for 3 months. It was sitting in the pending delete status for that long. There is no exact time frame unfortunately.
