Buying expired domains

I thought there was meant to be a deletion period for a domain but the domain i was interested in expired yesterday and has been registered by network solutions straight away. I don't understand if this means the original owner has re-registered (surely their name would be there) OR if network solutions have been able to jump the queue and buy the name.

Well this is because something weird is happening with the expired domains..

Seems like all of them are registered and traffic sniffed by the registrars themselves, before the delete actually happens. They usually expire at some point though.

As an example I backordered a domain at Godaddy in the start of July. The data said pending delete. but the delete date was May 11 2007.... The name dropped a few days later and I got it.

Now the thing is that I dident get a full years extension, like they say you will at godaddy.. I got the domain untill May 11 2007.. So for a couple of months this was in a domain no mands land ;) On the other hand you cant see the drop date either, so even though I only had the name for a week, the whois info says its has been regged for 3 years.

That is also how some people sell domains they backordered as being "aged".

Happens with most of them these days.. You cant trust any of the drop dates anymore..

Sometimes they even keep their whois data after going into pending delete..

    Its all very curious..

it also says 'registrar locked' -- don't know if this is significant.

Will stop visiting the domain don't wanna give the impression of any traffic!

    Dude..

If it is a high profile name.. Then dont try to get it.. Big players will outgun you very fast..

If it is a medium/low name then do a backorder at godaddy for 19$ or go the full nine yards and use snapnames or pool.

Only wait for the drop if it is a very poor name. All fairly good names (and others which are complete crap) will be snatched upon the drop.. Like in seconds ;)

thanks very much for all your advice. I've signed up with pool and snapnames -- don't know if i should do the same with big daddy on the off chance they get the name and i can therefore get it cheaper. Fingers crossed.

well 6 days since expiry and my friends at network solutions seem to have no desire to relinquish the domain. But i think if the registrars can avoid the redemption period it is far from a level playing field.
