Buying Expired Domains from Godaddy

Discussion in 'Domains' started by Henny, Sep 18, 2005.

Hi all, I have never bought an expired domain on godaddy before today. I purchased 3 of them. How long does it REALLY take to get the domain transferred to your name? They reserve the right to have it take 45 days....

It can really take 45 days. They say on tdnam.com that the period is reduced to two weeks if the domain isn't likely to be renewed. The criteria used for deciding this is not clearly explained at all.

Also, just because you have picked up a domain on tdnam.com, does not mean you will actually get it. You probably will but the redemption period is there for a reason and some domain owners will redeem their domains. It isn't a big deal but it can happen so don't count on the domain being yours until it actually drops into your GoDaddy account.

You mean you backordered the domains? Because Godaddy has the worst system on the net, they take your money and then you have to wait 45 days to see if you are lucky enough to get the domain. If the previous owner renews it, you get nothing. The money is sent back to you, but godaddy already got some nice interest from it.

Godaddy's backordering system is just a joke

No, I bid on an *expired* domain. Right now it is sitting at a PR7 and I am sweating, there is a text link DIRECTLY from CNN's homepage to this bad boy. So, either I wasted $10.00 or it was the buy of a lifetime. I have been copying and pasting urls for 2 hours evey night for the last 3 weeks hoping to snag a PR5. Just about shat myself when I won this one.

So what is the best place to backorder domains from? I've never done it, but I'm interested in a few domains that I think might not get renewed.

Depends where they were reg'd in the first place. GoDaddy has set up www.tdnam.com to deal with their expiring domains so that's the best place to grab a domain that was first registered by GoDaddy.

Other registrars ... hmmm, it depends. www.snapnames.com is often quoted as the best place to get an expiring domain name but the minimum you're going to pay is $60. If anyone else wants it ... who knows what the price will end up being.

There are other places to grab domains that are expiring. A good resource is www.snapcheck.com which tends to refer you to www.pool.com.

Read through www.dnforum.com. You can find out a lot there.

lol! No wonder you are laying eggs.

Best thing to do is hush, keep quiet and hope the domain drops for you at the end of the 45 days. In your account information at tdnam.com, it should tell you when the domain should become yours. Unfortunately, a PR7 is likely to get renewed so it doesn't sound too promising, but you never know ... just keep hoping.

(You'll get your $10 + reg fee back if it doesn't go through)

OK, it says Yours On xx/xx/2005. If that date comes and goes and the domain gets transfered to me, is that it? The original owner cannot come back and screw me?

Be interesting to hear how you get on with this Henny.
I've recently got a PR7 & PR6 domain from there. If the backlinks are all natural, then there's no reason why some of them shouldn't remain in place.
I'm still waiting for the transfer to take place. If the domain remains a PR7 after the next update, then I'll consider that I've bought a bargain. If it doesn't then at least I've not lost a lot.

The interesting thing will be do they help avoid any sandbox scenario. This is the first time I've played with expired domains. Be interesting to see how it goes.
