Buying "Dead" Websites

Discussion in 'Sites' started by Sleepy_Sentry, Sep 28, 2006.

I am interested in "flipping" websites and have found several good candidates. Unfortunately, I am unable to contact any of the sites' webmasters as both the WHOIS email addresses and emails on the website do not work.

Do you have any advice on what to do? What are some good ways to find "dead" websites to flip?

I could call these guys up, but I don't know if they would appreciate a phone call from some guy who found their phone number on the Internet.

I wouldn't appreciate a call. I'd only contact those who I could reach. Or you could call during dinner and just sound liek a salesperson... that must work sometimes I guess...

You call me via phone because you are interested in buying a website and I will do all I can to report you to the better business bureau and I can garentee I will not sell my site to you even if I am not doing anything with it.

Ever thought that they might just be ignoring your emails? Ever think that by calling them and bothering them you might actually piss them off garenteeing that you will NOT be able to buy their site?

People who are little overly ambitious give the rest of us a bad name. Same reason telemarketing sales gets a bad rap. They have good intentions, just trying to make a sale to earn a living, but they do it in a invading way by calling someone they did not get permission to call. Chill out, and find another solutions if they are not responding by email. If they have a phone number on the website, that is one thing, but looking the who is info up and calling that is border line obsessing or stalking in my book.

Ever think they wanna sell there site, but have no clue how to sell a site online? Ever think some Mom and Pop just bought it years ago and don't really care about it and wouldn't mind making $1K-$2K on their stupid little site?

    Goes both ways dude.

I wouldn't call it overly ambitious. Placing a friendly phone call, asking if they'd be interested in selling their business or their informational website might be a 'god-send' for some.

I've called people before and they were always happy to talk about selling their site.

    Exactly.

I have purchased sites and domains by calling after emails proved to be dead issues. I've found people who don't make the web their primary business communicate better via telephone and are able to make a decision faster.

Try it and, if they aren't interested, apologize and move on. Or the owner may be thrilled to get something for their site they kinda gave up on.

If they are ignoring your emails, the last chance to get the site is to call them up. They might be interested anyway. I would have called them, specially if I could give a decent offer. If you find that after 25 calls to different people that all of them get angry maybe you could consider not calling. But try it.

How do you find the websites you want to buy ?

..it never hurts..better business bureau would laugh if someone reported you for a legitimate sales inquiry. I own hundreds of sites and get calls all the time. Dead sites are many times owner by mom and pops or people who inherited them or just got stuck in the 90s and never adapted as times changed.

If you can't get a hold of them via a couple attempts via whois, or googling their email address or name, etc.. then move on. Sometimes people don't want to be found and most of those times, they are pretty savvy and won't sell anyways...

Alot of the time, they are abandoned, and eventually expire and end up in domain resellers market place as well, ie godaddy reseller market place.

Let me clarify something here. My emails are not being ignored, they are bouncing because the email addresses have expired.

Call them then. Seems like you are going to do it anyway, no need to get permission.:p
