    Hi,
I was wondering if google will penalize my web directory if I buy banners on other web directories or on sites related to webmasters.
    Need some suggestions.

    Thanks :)

If you are worried about it, just use nofollow tag on your link.

Come on fear, I am sure you know the answer to this....

Images do not manipulate SERPs in the same way that paid text links do.

Get them no-followed, either way it's not going to matter much as banner advertisement is mainly for traffic, the no-follow will atleast give you mental peace:)

Images do manipulate serps in image searches;)

There is no need for nofollow anyway.

Guys your telling him to use no follow but hes asking as a buyer not a seller, you cant tell the directory or other type of website where your paying what to do, therefore you either go for it or not.

If you keep asking questions over every last thing then your business will dry up completely, if google wont give you an answer then how can members on a forum.

Do it and take the risk, you may get penalised for something else anyway, may aswell make some pennies meanwhile.

The most simplest way would be buy banners and asked to be linked by a nofollow tag, you will be safe and Matt Cutts would also be happy.

You guys should listen to Pipes. Banner ads do not manipulate SERPs like text links do. Matt Cutts (your God, it seems) has mentioned this many times.

I've heard caves that don't echo as much as some of the posting around here

Nice one. Banner ads should be perfectly fine as long as they aren't abused.

The only thing that worries me though Mikey, what if Google starts to see that a zillion sites all show the same banner url? Would Google start crying foul as it did with text links?

My opinion is that just owning a directory is reason enough for Google to penalize you.

We recently added banner on Directory Critic and when checked yahoos back-links
its showing them and their is no "text link" to be seen under the banner or on the site. :)

Maybe yahoo is different then google and picks up banners not sure to be honest...
but google i imagine its ok since its not a "Text Link".

    thx

Any link: command brings up links. A link can have text or images as its anchor. Perhaps thats where people are getting confused.
