If you buy a domain that already has Pr and it is transferred to you, that PR will stick for the most part if the new site is related, right? Also, forget PR for a minute. Age is another big factor determining SERPs. If you buy a site from someone who registered it in 2001, and they transfer this domain to you, does that age stick in the eyes of the SERPs for your new site?
I would say yes to all of the above. However, if the previous owner was in control of most of the links pointing to this domain, they may remove those links and you will lose your PR. Or the websites that link to the domain may remove their links because the content of your new site may not be what they wanted to link to. So, its possible that you will lose the PR overtime. The age of the domain should stick regardless.
Nice. Where can I buy these domains, any domain broker? I know domains with PR are usually existing sites, I guess I am more interested in older domains and not PR so much. Any good resources?
I'm no expert on purchasing domain names. Do some searching on Google and perhaps start a new thread for that question in the domains forum - you;ll get more responses for your question that way.
You can find domains to buy right here at DigitalPoint in the "Buy,Sell,or Trade" section. Drop a post in there asking for domains that have older registrations and I bet you get inundated!
So if domains with older registrations net higher PR, do they have to be live? Or can you buy a domain registered say in 2000, but has not been used, put it live and expect a good PR fairly quickly?
I don't think PR will build easier because this is only about the backlinks, but the older website will be easier to do SEO on. I think the search engine algorythms take age as a significant part of the SERP results. Also, it may be easier to get some good links if people see the age of the site and recognize it should be easier to build some traffic and backlinks.
Sometimes it depends on the history/status of the domain... and the content that your going to put to your site... rankings might change due to some changes on the content of the site... or some changes in general...
Age of a domain is one of many factors for your rankings. Page rank is a separate factor. Page rank mainly just indicates the # and quality of your IBLs. Try to keep in mind that your end goal is high rankings, not just page rank.
