A normal computer can run as a web server. You just need the server software and to forward port 80 in your router. Most web servers run linux, apache, mysql and php.

A great internet connection is important.

A mac mini for hosting? Weird.

If you don't know what a server is you shouldn't start a hosting company. Or you should resell hosting (lease a web server and sell shared hosting).

Please follow my signature, bottom right hand to find Servers from $ 49.50/month, VPS from $ 29/month.

In that page you can see their different characteristics and further details to learn more on them.

Any P4 box will do I think.

And for the Web Server - You can also google apache web server. And by the way one requirement about having a web server you need a High Speed Internet or else you will end up having a server crawling :D

And also try to check this out http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/23555.html

    Goodluck....
