Buying a server?

Is there somewhere like a site or something where they sell an account on a server. A friend of mines son showed us how he had one for school. Seems like something that could be useful. I don't want to actually own a server just have some space on someone else's. Is that possible???
    Thanks,
    Noc

I don't know. Haha I need something to store files. I have a mac and I know with servers I can go to "Go" in the finder and it says connect to server. I would like something that will work with that? But not an actual server just some space on someone else's.

Not too sure, don't have a Mac.

I'm assuming it means shared hosting, or a VPS

    Thanks

Ya I have no idea I don't think it's shared hosting though. I'm thinking of a server like there is one computer and it acts as a server to a whole bunch of other computers.

I think you want to host the website from your own computer. This is possible by WAMP softwares which have Apache/MySQL and php supporting scripts pre-installed. The site would run on your own ip and you will have to keep your computer on for 24/7 for a 24/7 website.

I suppose that is what he did at his school. The Pc's are normally on 24/7 but are logged out and logged in randomly. I wouldnt suggest you to do it for a main site, but i would strongly recommend to do testing of stuffs over it. You can buy a VPS (virtual private server) in order to have somewhat same thing as the hosting from the PC, but these once have high uploading/Downloading and effective speed. It is almost same with dedicated server.

For a start, go for shared hosting packages, do inform me if you want any, I can do it for you, i am giving hosting for like 1$ a month for now. somewhat 300mb cpace and 3gb bandwidth with all other cpanel access.

Sounds like a file server, in which he can use to save documents to, and download them without having to carry a flash drive or something like that??

I'm not sure if there are hosts out there that do that kind of thing. Although I have seen a Firefox Addon which allows you to use GMail as a file host of sorts. Its called GSpace.
