Get a quad core CPU. I'm on the intel Q6600 and it runs perfectly for me. I run Photoshop / Media player / Games all the time. I use Dual 22" LCDs and I have no lag no matter how much I Multi-task.

For really heavy (aka. running lots of programs at the same time) you will need at least a very powerful dual core processor (at least 2.7 Ghz) or a Quad Core.

For RAM, you will need AT LEAST 2Gb but I would recommend getting 4Gb, it is not much more.

If you are into graphics and heavy duty software nothing can beat a Mac.
Quad core with all the RAM you can afford should do the trick.
The PC magazines should have the latest specs. All depends on your budget though.
