I made an offer to buy a domain name of a related website that list 2-3 in google for my keywords. If successfull, what would be the best approach to benefit my domain in temrs of traffic, SEO and SERP ? Thanks
The first thing to make sure of is that you're buying what is causing the site to rank ie content, links, etc. If a large portion of what is causing the site to are 301's pointing to it, you'll lose those if they do not remain in place. If you have enough content to build a related 2nd site, do so with related links, useful for your visitors, pointing to your main site. Dave
You could also leave the site there, and make a landing page. Pre-sell them a bit and send them to your main site to close them. Make the site an affiliate site where you don't pay commissions and the links actually count.
Would buying that domain, making it a 301 to my website be a real benefit ? Traffic wise im sure, but SERP wise ?
In the long run a 301 will not be a good idea. the new site will loose it's SERP and the the traffic will go down. Keep it as your second site on the subject and link it to your other one in some more obvious way. If the visitors don't like the second one the will go to your current site
Take my advice, Dont buy that domain. Buy the links on that page which is ranking in google. Because buying the domain will change the ranking of the site. How? You will change the whois information and it will defiantly affect the SE result at least for google.com. If not now, then defiantly in next google major index update (generally 3-4 months). But if existing whois record has same country of yours then the chances of affecting ranking is less. So, dont just buy it because it is ranking 2-3 in google for your keywords. First study that domain like age, backlinks, IP it is hosted etc and then buy.
