Hi Guys! I would just like to know what's the process in buying a domain name. And if you would be able to provide a site that offers a great value for my money, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Nikki
You actually rent the name for a period of 1 to 10 years. You can use the name so people can find your website easily usually with a keyword rich name that people will remember or use your business name. You can just go to any domain register, sign up which will take a few minutes to set up an account and then you can usually start registering domains as long as you can pay right away with a credit card or at some registers they also offer PayPal etc. Somme popular registers include Moniker, Godaddy, MyDomain.com, NameCheap and Dotster. Have a good read of these theads and you should get more of an idea on the whole process.
Thanks for the input Save! As I understand you would just be renting the names, but would it be possible for you to really "Own" the domain name?
It's more or less the same thing because you will always have the first option to renew the lease if you like. You can basically lock the domain in to be auto renewed each year etc so it will always be yours. I would not be concerned with this as registering a domain is like owning it but technically it is leasing.
Hello Nikki11, It is possible for you to own your own domain name, all you need to do is to register a domain name of your choice with any domain name registration companies. But you will need to renew the domain name every one or two years as the case may be. One of the popular domain name registration company, I have come across is Domain name registration & Hosting UK you can register any domain name extension with them.
Thanks for the reply Save. So, basically you will own the domain name(technically you will rent it), however, you would need to renew it in a span of time. Thanks!
hope it's all clear now Nikki, registering a domain gives ownership over it for the period of time you register it, you could host a website on it or sell it to someone else later on
I use ipowerweb.com for my domain name and hosting. They are inexpensive and very good. You can track visitors and easily put up websites. pm me and I'll let you know what package I am talking about
If you are looking to sell your domain name in the future I would recommend registering it at a very well known Registrar such as GoDaddy, Moniker or Namecheap. When you sell it you can simply and quickly 'push' (like a transfer to another account at the same registrar) the name to the buyer. If you are planning to develop the name into a real website all you need to do is assign the domain names servers to the company you plan to use to host the website - this does not need to be the same company where you registered the name. Confused? Don't worry, it real is not very complicated. Good Luck.
