When looking to the best bang for you buck when submitting to the big directories it is better to go Featured or Regular?

    featured.

you get top placement on all pages of the category, and sometimes the pages run quite deep.

Featured is the preferred option, but always buy within and to your budget:)

Many top Directories are affordable and value for money

As britishguy said, within your budget if u want to go for quite many good directories, then you may choose regular link but normally for those kind of directories, featured is the one you should choose :)

I would do the opposite. Larger directories don't have that many listings, therefore regular is suited.
Smaller directories started out giving free links which gives them a large listing. Go featured here. Not only that you could stretch the budget a little deeper.

Featured links are good but Regular is better than that coz in most of the directories featured links are placed for certain periods and for that you have to pay some amount but regular links will be visible forever until & unless linked site is dead and it is free. This way you would be benefited for long.

I think you cannot say that in advance, it depends on various factors.

For me, when choosing to go regular or featured, I'd consider:
    - page (in the category) at which you would be listed if featured and if regular (if you get the same page, I'd go regular)
    - features of the featured :) listing (for example in our directory we allow a longer description with keyword links and more links for featured listings)
    - price (obviously... ;)

    My .2 euros...

    Cheers!

If your looking for just a backlink i'd go for regular, however if you want (usually) a better indexed/level page and want your link to bring you traffic, your more likely to get better results from a sponsored listing - what you need to remember though is that traffic for directories (specifically general directories) are high because the traffic is created by people submitting their sites - high traffic doesn't mean you will get more traffic!
