An old competitor has a number of links still pointing to a site that should be available in the next few days (in REDEMPTIONPERIOD). My question is if I buy this domain name for the links and redirect to my site should I do this using starndard 301? Or do you recommend another method. Has anyone done this type of thing before? Thanks, the other, other Shawn
I think a 301 wourld work .I've done it in the past. Takes a while for the links to move over, but they do. Links to internal pages seem to go back to the homepage of the new url, even if the same html file is on both websites.
I recently renamed all my site pages and used 301 redirects - i lost all link counts for links which pointed to specific pages, although obviously domain only links still counted. I would tread very carefully - another example is if you check the link popularity of www.bodyniknaks.co.uk in all the web - over 51,000. This domain now resolves to my new url, but none of those links have carried over - this happened 3 months ago yet still the link count shows on the old domain. Google has wiped all but 1 of the links to the old domain and not credited any to the new one, in fact the new domain fell a point in the last PR update. Just my tuppence worth if anybody is interested.....
Part of what I am interested in is actual people clicking on the links or going by their favorites to get to the site. So I am not just trying to get the links for the link value alone. Thanks for the input so far. Anyone else have a suggestion? (BTW, my old competitor sold some of the same things so if people are looking for those items then I would be helping them find them.)
I knew a guy in the rental car business who would buy the phone numbers of failed competators. He would get occasional calls three and four years after they went out of business.
I guess back to the question - should I do a 301 redirect from the name or should I spend the time and make a few pages for the other domain name (hosting isn't an issue) and then have the buy links go to my main domain? Any suggestions on that?
You might check this link: http://www.bruceclay.com/SEO-tech-tips/techtips.htm I tried this last year and it was fine with all but Yahoo. Yahoo had problems with the 301 redirect and ended up indexing pages for the domain I used a 301 redirect on. Not sure if they have fixed it or not.
I would probably put up some pages of good content and then do a minor sales pitch and link to your site from a few of the pages.
