Buy a new laptop of fix the one you have?

I'm trying to decide whether I should fix my old laptop or simply just buy a new one. It is a Toshiba about 2.5 years old - very slow and has a lot of problems, both software and hardware related. That being said, it is under warranty for 3 years and I can get the hardware problems fixed free of charge, but would it be easier to simply buy a new one? I do not have the OS discs (did not come with computer) so I can wipe the HD and start clean. This is why I'm thinking it may be easier to simply buy a comparable laptop which would probably only cost around $500 now. Thoughts?

Buya new laptop if you can afford it. 64 bit with Windows 7 since support for XP runs out in a couple of years.

You can get a Dell Laptop with Windows 7 in or around $500.
They are better than others and will run for long time. Just select the one you like on their website and order it. :)

Thanks for your replies. I was guessing the same thing - around $500 for a mid-level laptop. Nowadays they seem to make computers and phones so crappy, that it's just easier to buy a new one after 2 or 3 years then it is to try and fix the one you have.

Technology is continually evolving so what was the top spec 3 years ago is now the bottom spec or even obsolete.

Oh I know but actually the specs on mine aren't much different than the cheaper ones today in the $500ish range. When it comes to processor speed we've hit a snag - no longer is it the rule of doubling every two years. They need to find a way to make them operate at cooler temps before we will start making much headway again.

Yeah, I guess. They're making up for it by shoving half a dozen processors in instead. :)
