Buy a domain name (Advise please)

I want to buy a domain name that already exists but I will be adding a single letter at the end. The domain name has an English phrase in it so it's not a unique company name.

Would it be a good idea to buy a domain name by adding the letter 2 at the end of the domain that already exists, for example: physics2.com?

The website will an educational website so the domain name will be similar to that.

All depends on who owns the other domain. You could put yourself into a leagl matter!

So should be completely scared and avoid it? The word physics is a very general word. I won't be using physics it will be another subject.

It will be nice if the existing domain has good traffic. If it is physics never add a number to it as it will loose all domain value. Instead you can add 's' to it.

Why would adding a number corrupt it's value? Suppose I was to 'ia' as in Physicsia.com

There is no obvious reason why you shouldn't or can't buy such a domain name. I personally don't like it, it gives the impression that the original name wasn't available and you just added the number. Nevertheless, this is just me and I can't speak for less experienced users that might be part of your clientèle.

Thanks everyone, I've learnt something definitely. This is the domain name I have decided to go with: http://www.mathsrev.com targeting maths.
