Im wondering, if a movie shows a made up company and logo (no such business exists). does the film maker have legal rights to the name and logo? and if so, for how long?

In short, yes. They have a copyright in the name and the logo, depending on when the film was released, for up to 120 years...

The logo is protected. Protection on the name would depend on the name and usage. Just having a name in a movie does not automatically give it broad trademark protection.
