I'm considering getting some cards printed for a new website that I'm promoting, but I don't want to put a phone number on them. I'll just have my email and website on the card.

Are we over the need to have phone numbers on business cards for web based businesses?

I think you should atleast print a number on them because there are still to much people who are also printing emails before reading them. And sometimes it might help to talk to a customer directly, but I would recomend you to use an extra phone number for this purposes and not your private one

For me, online business should be treated just like any other type of business. Displaying a phone number on your business card will make you more trusworthy and serious with what you're doing.

Well, it depends on the type of business, and where you're going to be distributing those business cards. Obviously if you go to a convention in America (and you're from Australia) there's no real need for a phone number unless you have a dedicated staff.

My business cards do not have my phone number on there. I can, however, write the phone number on the back if clients want to contact me. Otherwise, they know where I can be found because of where they found me in the first place.

It depends on the purpose and type of business.

Lets say you are printing the cards to give away for an e-commerce website. Just the url of the site and a message should be just fine.

Lets say you are giving away business cards for a web development business. You should have a phone number, email on the card.

I've got my number on my 'real' business cards, but that's not what I'm talking about here.

I'll be schmoozing potential clients at conventions/trade shows, talking the site up, and basically don't want to be 'on' over the phone. Plus, I really want to push people towards the website, and not have them picking up the phone to ask me stupid questions that are already explained in detail on the site.

Target audience is over 40, web savvy, but still kinda old school.

Could you perhaps set up an 800 number or a recorded message to guide them to the website?

Some people just like using the phone. And if they like using the phone then you should give them that option.

The phone is still a MAJOR business tool. Even if you're a completely online business, you should still have a phone number. People tend to trust a web based business if they think they have the option of speaking witha real person.

What we have done is have a business card for the parent business with numbers, etc. and each website gets a promo card that is only an address, design, and marketing pitch, nothing more.

Phone Number is the must, however you can clearly mention that check website for details, and also you can redirect callers to the website and email.

If the whole issue is that you do not want to give out your "real" phone number, then get a prepaid phone, and use it instead of your real phone. Here in the USA, you can pick up disposable pre-paid phones for less then $50. And then just buy the time as you want to.

But I think it looks a lot more professional to have a phone number.

ALWAYS include as many details on your card as you can, and a phone number is essential :)

I don't understand why you wouldn't put it on. Does it cost you more to do so? Just put it on, what's the loss?

Yeah that's spot on in my opinion. If I don't see a phone number when I'm looking at a contact page of a site, I have to ask; Why?

Sometimes I may only want to contact them via email, but if there is no phone number I still have to question whether the business is trustworthy.
