There is a difference between a Burqa, Niqab and Hijab (head covering).

Hijab is mandatory while Burqa and Niqab are not as far as I know.

 

I suppose the point being made in the opening post is the notion of religiously covering of the head and how it came into effect in the first place, not cultural or regional varieties or given names of it.

 

actually Burqa is not any religious invention.
The real history is that in the age of Prophet Muhammad SAW when Muslim women used to go out for their necessities the jews used to tease them, Whem Muslim came to know. they asked jews about it.. they told they were unable to recognized whether she was muslim or not.. then by God it was ordered to use a scarf to Muslim Women.. Muslim women accepted it.. after this scarf became a necessary part of Muslim women dress.. it was also started to use as a protection of women & men.. it dont not protect only Women.. there are less chances for a man to think indecent for a Muslim women who is covered up..

Burqa is a form of long coat used by Muslim women..Muslim women feel so protected because people dont stare when they cant see body features, where as in west women now relying on very tight dress to show their body features like figure etc. or even relying on strips too thats why in every minute american women go through rapes.

Well, i write two month ago that Burqa is not a part of women dress in Islam, even not a single world mentioned about it in Quran and hadees, Burqa is actually a traditional wear in Islam world.. it is not necessary in Islam to wear Burqa (As much as i know)

Its only Hijab which is compulsory for a women. basically it is written in Quran:

“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59)

Covering head is the part of Women dress, which is actually part of other religion too:

“When Brahma has made you a woman, you should lower your gaze and should not look up. You should put your feet together and you should not reveal what the garment and the veil conceals.”

as much as i know almost all major religion support Hijaab, but the difference is that Muslims still remembers their Islamic values

On a side note, I just read today that Syria banned face veil from Universities.
