Hello, I am working starting to work with a seo campaign for a local music school. They have basically 5 keywords to optimize for: austin music lessons, austin drum lessons, austin piano lessons, etc. In addition, there are five cities in Austin that they want to bring in customers from: austin, cedar park, round rock, etc. If you take all the combinations of keywords when you combine the main keywords with the cities there are a lot of different variations: ex: austin music lessons, round rock music lessons, cedar park music lessons, etc...etc. It ads even more when you ad tx or texas onto these combinations: ex: austin tx music lessons. So, my question is how many keywords to you optimize for on the main. I have read that you should optimize for the top 2-3 kewords on the home page. And then optimize for less important keywords on sub pages...doing this we can only optimize specific pages for a fraction of these keyword combinations. So, do we just do for a fraction and then skip the other keywords that we can't optimize for? I know that some companies choose to have seperate websites for individual areas within a major city then optimize the individual sites...is this the best option? It seems like a lot more work and expense. I'd appreciate anyone's advice or pointing me to where I can learn the answer to these questions. Scott
Hi Scott, I think the best approach would include having separate landing pages for the specific keywords you want to target. For example, someone looking for piano lessons will not want to read about drum lessons, so create a page that is purely focused on piano lessons with appropriate keywords in the title, meta-description, headings - usual stuff. Make sure you have a call to action - sign up, or get their email address in exchange for something of value - again, the usual stuff. Rinse and repeat for each of the separate offerings you have. The locations will require a bit more thought, as a separate landing page for each combination of product, state and city would not be practical. You might be able to include each location on each product landing page. Don't send all SERPS traffic to the home page. This will be less effective. Paul
