Bumping threads?

I just want to be sure I'm clear on this. Bumping of any kind is not allowed?

What if I post a question that doesn't get answered after several days and ends up buried?

I understand what I did wasn't what I'm asking and completely understand the infraction, so I'm just trying to learn how to deal with a hypothetical situation in the future.

There must be some way to get an answer to one's question. See, if I post a question, but don't know the answer, I won't ever have anything of value to add to the thread in order to get it recognized again. Of course I could always ask the question again, but that's punishable too. So the thread continues to get lost since people don't tend search for things they know the answer too.

    • Is it appropriate to ask the question in a different way? Maybe concisely reworded for clarity?
    • What about if you think you may get a better response in a different subforum? Would that be acceptable?
Currently this doesn't even apply to me, since I've been able to draw conclusions about my question through other sources and will most likely just follow up with what I think is a possible answer. Thus I believe not violating the rules, correct? But I'm still curious in case I decide to spend some time here.

It's hard to say, depends how your second post was worded. Bear in mind it would also have to be reported meaning at least 1 person thinks it's a bump.

Don't take infractions too personally, we all get them, but as long as you try to obey the rules you should never reach 10 active infraction.

Basically if you don't get an answer go to another forum to ask. Because if you bump the thread or make another thread with the same question, you're zapped.

And from my experience, this site has zero tolerance. Again, your best bet is to have many other webmaster message forums bookmarked.

    Right on.

Oh, and I didn't realize that it would have to be reported first. So I guess it's highly situational. Thank you, I'll be more careful in the future. Oh, i almost forgot to add my suggestion. Maybe put links to posting rules in stickys at the top of each of the forums. I read "DON'T post your sale ads for your domains in this forum area. Read this topic!" but didn't think to search elsewhere. Could help cut back, I don't know.

If no one answers your question then it's most likely that no one knows the answer. And starting the same thread in different subforums is not allowed.

With over 2000 posts I'm assuming you have quite a bit of forum experience. Meaning you of all people would know that this isn't necessarily true. Most posts only reach a limited amount of people in a limited amount of time. (i did say most, lol) :rollseyesback: :D

Also Good advice. I don't think you are insinuating anything, right? I don't know people here anyway, lol. Well, except for you all :)

A good way of getting your thread noticed is to put a link in your signature to the thread, lots of people are doing that now and as far as i'm aware that would be fine. Just as long as you don't deliberately spam to get your sig noticed.

    hope this helps

Assuming the people who see the thread are the people who don't know the question, or have the time to answer it at the particular moment. The handful of people who probably do know the answers and are able and willing to help won't ever have the opportunity to see the thread... and will never see the question to help.

I won't speak for all mods but imo there's bumping to get an answer to a genuine question and then there's bumping to sell/self promote.

you can ask the question again in same thread but maybe narrow down the question a bit so it will be easier to answer. if you just repeat the question or asking noone know the answer? it probably will consider as bumping.

No, you got infractions for duplicate threads and also for bumping the one you are referring to by creating the thread followed by this a short time later:
    A clear bump.
