In the next 2 years (long term goal) I want to implement a members area for the association. I'm thinking a Bullitin board might be the way to go... here's what I invisage needing (although I may need more or less after speaking with the cnstituent groups)

    *Calendar
    *File Upload
    *Communal Notes
    *Group Specific Notes
    *Self Registration
    *Easy To Maintain
    *Easy To Use

Let me know - in your opinion - the greatest and the worst software to use.

In what scripting language do you prefer, i.e., .ASP, .PHP, etc.?

At this stage - I don't really care... I'm going to have to upgrade our hosting package to allow it anyway - I'm just looking at the moment.

If I can find a really good one (or one that matches what we need) I have more leeway in getting the money released.

For .ASP, I've used Snitz Forums (h++p://forum.snitz.com/) for a long time. Though the features you mentioned are not available out-of-the-box, you could easily modify the code and add them as there are a lot of people contributing mods.

I'm not very much familiar with PHP but I've know that the most often used message boards for PHP are PHPBB (h++p://www.phpbb.com), vBulletin (the one DP is using, h++p://www.vbulletin.com) and SMF (h++p://www.simplemachines.org/).

I don't have any experience though on commercial BB software.

I have several ipb (invision power boards) have always found them to be incredibly helpful and robust.
