I was thinking about designing/building webpages for local companies. The way I would do it is similar to how i did my last business. I use to run a tree trimming business. What I would do is drive around town until I saw an area that needed some work done and I would go and find the land owner and talk to him about getting some work done for him. It went pretty well and I made a decent amount of money. usually around 10-20K a month. Now that's not all profit. I had to keep my truck and trailer going, I had to keep my chainsaws going (bar and chain is around 60 bucks and those need replacing every couple of jobs) and I had to pay my two hands. Overall it was a good business but it was very labor extensive. I was thinking of doing web development the same way but in a more professional manner. I would get business cards made to hand out at various places of business such as pc repair stores, post fliers at convenient stores, take out and ad in the newspaper, several other various local marketing methods. My main way of getting business though would basically be to get a phone book go through until I saw a business that could profit from having an online presence. Then I would try to find out if it already did. If not then I would call and set up a meeting to discuss with the owner/manager the benefits of having an online presence. I would show up for the meeting in a very professional manner (suite/tie/clean shaved) show him my portfolio, give him a business card and if it wasn't already a hook I would simply walk away hoping for a phone call without pressing or trying to sell him anything. Hopefully in the meeting he realizes that he would benefit from an online presence. Afterwards he may look into the idea, shop around, but more than likely if he decided to go through with expanding to the internet he would call me. As far as specifics go I'm very confident in my abilities to produce the material on a professional level. That's not what I'm here to ask you. What I'm curious about is the success rate of finding customers in this market with this method. Does anyone else do this? How likely are they to call you? While I understand that nothing can be pinpointed there is probability. I live in Oklahoma City. Well not really. I live in Guthrie, but most of you probably don't know where that is. It's the old capital of Oklahoma about 20 miles north of OKC.
