Building Websites as a Career?

Discussion in 'Programming' started by acw, Dec 19, 2012.

    Hi,

I'm seriously looking at building Websites as a career.

I'm not sure i have the personality necessary to do it day-in-day-out.

I've built a few websites and I've learned some basic HTML, XHTML, some basic PHP.

What personality types do best in this field...and which don't?

Thanks all for your constructive input.

I have created sites for a few years and everyday I am learning something new. I thinks the best way to create sites its with Wordpress, the best CMS ever, you can make anything you want with it, with a small input you can earn good money with this job.

    Thanks Consumer!

In the past i have worked in Sales...and enjoy the selling process. However, working for some "SWEAT SHOP" that cranks out sites is not my idea of fun (unless i can learn a lot). From what i'm hearing from acquaintances that do website development...this can be tough.

My idea was to build websites...and build up a client base that would enable me to make a living building and selling websites. I guess what scares me is working alone from home-isolated on a day-in-day-out basis. I like people...and maybe the idea of working isolated without human contact is what i'm concerned about.

I guess i got discouraged using Drupal...as this seems to be the most complicated of the CMS (not to mention slow as hell) programs.

Thanks so much for your comments!

This is something I have also been playing around in my mind, while trying to come up with a decent way to make money. I don't think your personality has anything to do with it, if you enjoy what you do, you'll be good at what you do, it's that simple.

You have to be disciplined and force yourself to generate leads, even in times when you are busy with current projects.
You have to think ahead to earn enough money with it. You should also ask yourself if designing/programming is something you would fancy full time.
In a world where every minute a company is born (or more), there is always room for web developers!

You're asking 2 totally separate questions here:

    1) Are you right-brained or left-brained? Programming (developing websites) is a left brain activity. Selling and website design are right brain activities.

    2) Do you want to work in someone else's office, ior do you want to run your own business?

You have to answer BOTH questions before you have an answer. (If you decide to go into web development, please learn programming [in English, not in a programming language] first, or you'll just be another "I can develop websites" pretender who won't get anywhere, except to make more bloated incorrect crappy sites.)
