Building my first website

Hi all, first off, I have to admit, I am 100% a newbie when it comes to building a website. I have tried to start, but with so much to learn, I just get frustrated and quit.

I find I work better (in real life) with step by step instructions, so I am going to go out on a limb and ask for some serious help.

I am wondering if anyone could give me like a step by step rundown of how a newbie could create and publish his first website. Like 10 "simple" steps or something.

Sorry for the newbie request, but hope some of you can help me.

    Jon

I'd start off with learning HTML so you could create the website.

If you want to go more advanced, you can learn CSS, PHP/MySQL, or javascript

5 Simple steps (details left out to maintain simplicity)
    1. register domain and obtain hosting
    2. hire a designer (maybe a contest)
    3. hire a coder if needed
    4. upload files
    5. Attract visitors

If you intend to do the designing and coding yourself

    1. Learn graphic program (photoshop)
    2. learn html/css
    3. Obtain domain and hosting
    4. upload files
    5. attract visitors

Thanks for the replies guys, but this is still like a foreign language to me. Like what do I do first? then what? then what? I know I need to learn html, but what if I just want to get a site up asap with minimal html knowledge?

www.freewebs.com has free everything including templates to chose, at least try it out and get an idea of how things work. If you cant figure this out, go back to my first reply and hire people to do it for you. In order to maintain a site you must know some basic html, so i would atleast learn the basics.

Hey, I'd like to recommend you to poke your head into this tutorial right here [http://www.digital-tochi.com/vb/showthread.php?t=166].
It's a rather simple How-to tutorial on how to make a layout. One of the most basic and easiest forms to create, even with little HTML knowledge.

However, I'd adivce you to take a look at this [http://www.digital-tochi.com/vb/showthread.php?t=142] if you're going to code everything on your own.

I hope this will help you any on your way towards your first website. I remember back a good five years when I was going to make my own website, without any superior knowledge about graphicmaking or coding.

to create a very simple HTML file, use notepad on your computer and save the file you make as file1.html etc...Keep all your experimental files in 1 folder on your desktop. Once you start learning to create basic HTML pages and link them together on your home computer, it is fairly easy to get a domain name and web host, then upload them with FTP software.

Lol, I'd be just as confused as he was by some of you guys' posts :p

Get hosting with a WordPress.org blog, which is fairly simple to use. If you need help related to WP, PM me or use their forums :)

Depends what you want. Do you want to learn any coding, or do you want a life? If you want to learn coding the best way is to just practice practice and practice... HAND CODING!!! Please, if you are going to learn to build websites, learn the basics by hand.

If however you still want a social life, you have three options depending on budget.

    Free
The likes of Geocites, Freewebs enable you to have your own website for free. Downsides being the crappy domain name, and having little control over your site. Plus adverts are placed on your site which you don't earn money for!

    Small Outlay
There are the likes of network87.com who can provide you with a website for $100 with you requiring no technical knowledge whatsoever. What's more, you earn money from your website, and for other things too. Plus you get your own domain name, and unlimited hosting (I think within reason!) included in the price!

    Flash the Cash!
Simply google web design companies and hire someone to make one for you! Or if you can design, do your own design in PhotoShop and just google for PSD to xHTML complanies and they'll turn your design into a functional website!

Anyway, these are the options! It's up to you to choose which one suits your needs/lifestyle/wallet!

Hope this gives you something to think about!

If you're looking for a advanced looking site, try designing with CSS; Andy Budd has some great CSS books, check them out.
    Kind Regards.
