Building links with blog comments

I would appreciate your opinions on leaving comments on blogs.

    1. Is it best to use your name or is it ok to use the name of the website or a keyword? I have seen people use both but not sure whether some blogs might class it as spam if you use a keyword/website name.

    2. Do you have the links all pointing to your homepage or is it ok to use internal pages? Would this depend if the internal page is relevant to the blog post and comment that you are leaving?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Alot of blogs now use no follow and links are worthless.

I think alot of blog owners also use redirection urls so they are not worth anything also.

You would want to have url that relates to topic of blog and you can link to any page. Most people consider keywords or website name blog spam.

Worthless is only true as far as passing link value is concerned.
You still can get traffic by posting comments.

Also, there are quite some blogs now that have the DOfollow feature installed.
By disabling the NoFollow feature, they allow (some) link juice to be passed.
But then of course there are lots of people who spam these comment
sections with a worthless post, just for the sake of link value.
That's why most of these blog owners have moderation in effect.

The trick is to post a useful and valuable comment for the blog owner, so that
(s)he's happy with your contribution and maybe visit your blog too.
And so will other comment posters.

Contributing valuable comments can build you a nice network of links.

Blog comments do have some value - I used to be a regular comment-leaver and usually left my chosen anchor text as my name. If you do this remember that there's a fine line between comment-leaver and spammer - a comment leaver reads the post and contributes something relevant to it, usually in several sentences: a spammer contributes nothing but a few crap words and their link. It's true that most (not all) blog comment links are nofollow, hence don't pass PR, but they may have some Yahoo/MSN/AV value - no-one truly knows about that. They can be a good source of traffic.

For me its all about trying to stop your comments looking like span, therefore keywords anchor texts are not recommended.

Thanks for your comments. I agree there is a fine line between useful comments and spamming. Alot of people just seem to copy what somebody else has written previously so they can try to get away with not even reading the article.

Most of the blogs these days have a default "nofollow" tag associated with them. And finding blogs without "nofollow" tag is an art in itself :).

Though when I find any, I leave links to my inner pages also apart from linking back to the main URL.

Depends on your domain. I always post as "Bloggeries". IF you write a good comment shouldn't be a problem. If your domain is keywordy i'd avoid it. The link is still good.

NoFollow doesn't give you power but I have a site with lots of NOFOLLOW actualy almost all and it's PR3.

    Good luck

i dont think that blog comments will help you to get better serp point because most of the blogs are using nofollow in their links to prevent the spam

Once again thanks for all your comments. The site I will be linking to is http://www.recyclingsupermarket.com

I was planning on posting relevant comments on environmental sites such as treehugger.com. I understand in many cases the links will be nofollow, but was hoping it could also bring targetted traffic to the site which in turn could generate links that way.

Keep in mind most blog comments are nofollow, so it's not of great use to spam them.

just in case there is anyone reading this and wonderinghow to avoid these no follow blogs just remember to do the following.

    1. Get the firefox plugin from www.seobook.com
    2. Go to the blog that you are interested in leaving comments to
    3. With the SEO book plugin active see if the comments on the posts are highlighted (this means that they are nofollow)

Post comments or not but remember you will only get traffic form the no follow links no link juice from the linkback

    So can we say that,
Blog comments are no longer useful for building backlinks to your site.
But honest comments might help you to be a part of the community and might bring some traffic.

How about trackbacks? Are they useful for building backlinks?

Is there any way to circumvent the nofollow tag on these comments? If this is blackhatty just let me know and I'll stop. But if you leave a comment that actually contributes something, it does help build valuable content for the webpage so it seems you should be rewarded in some way. I guess you are rewarded with some traffic. Just thinking out loud.

Once I was offering blog comments as a service to webmaster where i would comment on relative blogs without spamming. But i stopped it when blogs started to use no follow tags.

I would not recommend you to work on blog comments for back links

If your comment is contributing something and not spam, may be it can be helpful for Yahoo! SEO. As many said, most blogs use nofollow tag in the default settings for comments.
