Building links in Natural Ways as prescribed in google webmaster guidelines

Google has recently penalized a lot of websites for breaching its webmaster guidlines specially on Link building. An example : gocompare. blogspot.com

Now my question or topic for discussion is if you are not a brand and you have a average website how can you build links?

Google says put lot of content and information on your website and let other webs use your content and link to your website. But more or less this is for bigger brands or portals and in realistic smaller website don't have much chance to get links through this natural way.

1.) Is submitting to online directories is of any use now? Infact can it get you penalized as most of the web directories are for seo's and link farm

2.) Is article submission as useful now as it used to be? As again article directories are for SEO's and more or less link farms.

3.)Buying blog reviews / blog posts is out of question as the example i showed above, website got a penalty for buying blog posts. But is there any way out still?

4.)Social bookmarking - most of the cases done from SEO prospective and specially in case smaller website. So is it of any use?

Only valid method i see is Online Press Release but thats too expensive for small website owners.

So what are the ways / natural ways so as not to get penalized and promote a smaller website?

It will be good to have a healthy discussion out here..

Really it is good to get in good with the bloggers in your niche and when the relationship develops they will give you a link. I got 500 or so this way. Um articles are still good since they have editors making sure it is quality content and limiting the amount of links in the site. Directory submission is still decent but really should only be a very small part of your online marketing campaign. I would really recommend and it was what I read on all the google forums when reasearching PR and serps postion is to exchange links with relevant sites in your niche. This is how google places you in the right category in their index I know this since I read the google page rank patent. Anyway I hope this sheds some light.

Link exchange can get you penalized.

basically relationship means either exchange or buying links from blog so...

Article editors...there are hardly a few handful genuine article directories rest all are seo stuff...

1.) Is submitting to online directories is of any use now? Not really, only directories targeted to your niche will benefit you. Not sure if it actually will get you penalized.

2.) Is article submission as useful now as it used to be? Article directories should be used for syndication only. Don't expect to get any link value from the article directory. We consider article distribution to have a great value as long as your content is republished in other websites.

3.)Buying blog reviews / blog posts is out of question as the example i showed above, website got a penalty for buying blog posts. But is there any way out still? If you buy a review in a niche related site it will help, don't buy a review in a site that is reviewing websites on every subject or it will be to obvious in google eyes.

4.)Social bookmarking? Helps in non competitive keywords and for indexing, don't believe that it will rank any competitive keyword with bookmarking unless, again, you get in the first page of sites like digg and you'll be syndicated a lot!

Don't expect to rank a .blogspot domain in any niche with competition. The algos are evolving and they take into consideration many factors, URL age and authority is becoming more and more important.

guest posting is my favorite nowadays. Article submission gets you LOADS of backlinks but unfortunately they come from duplicate filtered pages :(

Becoming a guest blogger at some blog is a nice suggestion. It will be great to hear some nice suggestions like this.

One i can think of is buying paid listings in Yellow pages, business directories.

But surely doing free submissions in link farms, reciprocal linking, buy paid blog reviews can harm you in negative way. Though many websites still rank well despite all these but one don't know when they come under scanner and loss their rankings.

The method I use of building backlinks in blog posts of high PR blogs across the web does very well for me.. These blogs are not linked in anyway and are on different Class IP addresses so there is very little chance of you losing your links.

It is an absolute chore for me to build links and I've tried so many different strategies without hitting on the really golden ones. So far though, based on my personal experience, commenting on related blogs and submitting articles to quality directories have worked for me

Yes i think Guest Blog posts is a pretty decent way to go about it, and i think if you buy blogposts in a Smart and sensible way, its still is a very good source. [ Common Sense, is Not so Common! ]

i use dofollow blogs, articles, and press releases. i have pretty good results. i have never gotten good results from link directories.
google does not penalize you for the links, if they dont like them, they just dont count them.

My best results have come from building links from a variety of sources. Each method has it's own pros and cons, but, when combined together, makes for a much more natural linking pattern.
