Yes links in dofollow forums will give you backlinks, just don't spam.

But do several posts in the same forum give you several links?
I always thought you just get 1 link per domain no matter how many times you post.

Nope...you can have an unlimited number. It all depends on the page really. If the page is PR 5 then you are going to get some juice but most post pages are 0 or 1 so you do not get much from them.

How do you check if forums are DoFollow?

The seo quake plugin for firefox will tell you what pages are DoFollow and what
    pages are NoFollow.

To check to see if they are DoFollow you need to look at the source code view. unless it is stated on the website (probably not)

Look at the source... if they're DOFOLLOW it won't have rel="nofollow" in the link.

Most of the backlinks from forum posts will be PR0 so they dont benefit in increasing your PR too much, HOWEVER, they get you more traffic from search engines if the forum itself has high PR. :)

It helps but it is questionable as to how much it really helps. For non-competitive terms using forums is a great way to rank for terms though, I have used forum marketing a lot in the past but my link building tactics have progressed since then.

yes it helps only if you do quality posting and not spamming by just dropping your links.

when a thread starts, it will have PR0 to begin with. however, if it is a popular or resourcefull thread and people keep posting on it, it will have its own PR over time. i c forum posting as a long term investment. when i started with DP, i had zero posts and now that i have all these posts, i c some of my old posts having its own pagerank

    Here's a good answer.

nofollow - means your URL will not be followed by search engines as such your link will not counted as a valid link pointing back to your site.

dofollow - It is the opposite of it. It is the practice of removing the NoFollow tag from the comment link. It only means that whenever you make a comment - not a spam - on the site that enable DoFollow, you will not only engage in the conversation with other commentators, you will get rewarded with a backlink provided that you leave your URL when commenting.
